In 2009 the city of Durban commissioned Woza Moya to create a four meter long beaded map of Africa for the Moses Mabhida Stadium. After six weeks and the delicate work of 200 crafters the project was complete and Woza Moya began to get well-deserved recognition. Soon after, during a body-mapping workshop, Thomson noticed that many group members had stopped looking to the future and had stopped dreaming. She created the goal to get those afflicted and affected by HIV/AIDS to reignite dreams lost to time.

After being inspired by the 2009 Design Indaba, a design conference that takes place in Africa each year, Woza Moya searched for ideas to submit to the Indaba 2010. Armed with inspiration, the need to raise money for a new craft center and Thomson’s new goal, Dreams for Africa was born. The “Dreams for Africa Chair” is a “talking” chair in which everyone is invited to sit and share their dreams of the future. This beautifully beaded chair was created by 160 men and women and adorned with two wings in the shape of Africa to inspire love and beauty for country and countrymen.
